Spanish explorers in the 16th century arrived at this seven mile long island questing for the fountain of youth and El Dorado , the city of gold. Along with financier Charles Roser they formed the Anna Marie Beach Company creating the streets and laying out the town. Charles Roser is also known as the inventor of the Fig Newton, later absorbed into the National Biscuit Company or Nabisco. It was this stock purchase that created the million dollar windfall that enabled him with his father to develop further Florida real estate.
The Anna Marie beach company enabled visitors to access the island in 1911 via a 678 foot long pier at the end of Pine Avenue. known as the Anna Marie City Pier this structure has enabled tourists to imagine owning their very own Anna Marie homes and by 1948 those who owned Anna Marie property here could truthfully say that they were living in a film location after the MGM production of "On an Island With You". The island became even more accessible in 1957 with the opening of a drawbridge on the Manatee and Cortez roads, unfortunately the airport opened from 1948 closed in 1973.
