Have there always been Florida homes for sale? Well, in the case of Longboat key Sarasota Homes were built on the North end of Longboat key in the early 1900's. Originally occupied by Timucan and Caloosa native Americans, the first outsider to visit was Hernando DeSoto who is thought to have visited the area with Juan Anasco manning the "longboat" through the north pass in 1539. It wasn't until Civil War veteran Thomas Mann settled here and developed his Sarasota Florida Home on 144 acres on the north end of the key (now in Manatee County) that was awarded as a homestead grant that there was any Sarasota property. You could say that the land became Sarasota Florida real estate when Mann sold up for $500 at the beginning of the 20th century.

Although some of those early Longboat Key properties are still standing, development of Sarasota homes for sale in the town of Longboat key did not peak until the 1960's and 1970's. In fact owning a Sarasota home here during World War Two meant listening to the regular roar of Army Air force planes as they carried out their target practice on the beaches in preparation for the more arduous tasks which lay ahead over the beaches of Normandy. The few residents were protected by gates which blocked Gulf of Mexico drive until target practice was over.

Since then Longboat key has become fully developed and is popular with retirees, second home owners and as a tourist location being surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico with it's warm waters and fine white sandy beaches to the West and Sarasota Bay to the East. Those looking for sale homes in Florida on Longboat key will find a wealth of athletic activities including boating , fishing, golf and tennis . Those seeking more serious pastimes will find an active business life led by Longboats key very own Chamber of Commerce.
