The first Venice Florida real estate was developed by Richard Roberts in 1870 in the vicinity of Roberts Bay. A gentleman by the name of Frank Higel purchased part of this Venice property in 1884 to be the Venice home of his canning operations for citrus fruits. Frank Higel together with the first Postmaster Darwin Curry opened a community post office near Shakett Creek it was then that the name of Venice was chosen by the two. The construction of Venice Florida Homes really took off with the opening of a rail link in 1911.
